This week Rintje Ritsma announced his retirement from speed skating. Ritsma looks back on an amazing career, including four World All-round Championship titles (1995, 1996, 1999, 2001), two World Single Distances Championship titles in the 1500m and 5000m in 1997 and six European Championship titles. The only thing missing on his list of victories is an Olympic gold medal, he did however win two silver and four bronze Olympic medals. In 1995 Ritsma was the first speed skater in the Netherlands to quit the national team to start his own professional speed skating team, leading the way for other speedskaters to do the same.
